Memorial Day weekend is the kick off to the Spoleto Festival and Piccolo-Spoleto Festivals in the Charleston area. The Spoleto Festival is a Charleston tradition dating back to 1977 when it was started as the American complement to the Festival dei Due Mondi held in Spoleto Italy.  The Spoleto Festival features internationally known performers bringing their amazing talents to Charleston for over 140 performances. Everything from Japanese Opera to Spanish Flamenco Dancing to a French Circus and American dancers will be performing during this festival. Running concurrently to the Spoleto Festival is Piccolo Spoleto hosted by the City of Charleston Office of Cultural Affairs. Piccolo Spoleto highlights local artists through 700 performances and exhibits around the city. Piccolo Spoleto will include writing workshops, performances, artists’ exhibits and much more.  Both festivals start on May 24th and run 17 days until June 9th.
